Healing with paws, presence, and authentic connection
Therapy doesn’t have to happen behind a desk. Here, we offer a gentle, collaborative space—one where healing can come through the warmth of a wagging tail, a soft nuzzle, or a quiet moment of shared calm. Let me introduce you to Sitka, my two‑year‑old black Labrador, who loves belly rubs, snuggles, and most of all, being a truly present, comforting companion during our work together.
Meet Sitka
Sitka is a certified therapy dog with the kind of sweet, intuitive nature that makes people feel seen, safe, and unhurried. He’s happiest nudging his nose into your lap or simply existing quietly by your side while we talk (or sit in silence). Many clients say they feel “more grounded,” “less guarded,” or “just... softer” with Sitka in the room.
Why AAT works
Animal-assisted therapy is more than a feel-good moment—it’s backed by research showing real benefits:
- Calms your body and mind — Interacting with therapy animals can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and soothe stress by increasing oxytocin (a calming hormone) and reducing cortisol (a stress hormone).
- Eases anxiety and supports emotional expression — Just being near a therapy dog can help reduce anxiety and create an emotional bridge, especially in therapy sessions.
- A nonjudgmental presence — Animals offer comfort that feels unconditional and authentic. Many clients find it easier to open up when Sitka is gently leaning in or resting quietly nearby.
- Supports trauma healing — In studies of PTSD, animal-assisted therapy has been shown to reduce symptoms like hyperarousal, avoidance, and emotional numbing, while encouraging social connection and emotional safety.
What our Portland, Oregon sessions look like.
You’re always in the lead. Sitka might invite a moment of soft contact, a pause where words aren’t needed, or a quiet breath alongside yours. Therapy with Sitka is trauma-aware and deeply client-centered—your comfort, pace, and boundaries are what guide our time together.
Whether we’re exploring your story, practicing mindfulness, or working through grief or overwhelm, Sitka adds an embodied layer to your experience—the invitation to feel a little more grounded, seen, or soothed.
